Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lalique?

Lalique is a French luxury crystal maison founded in 1888 by René Lalique, an artist whose visionary work in jewelry and glass helped define both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Today the brand is recognized worldwide for its handcrafted crystal vases, sculptures, decorative objects, tableware, and glassware. Each piece is produced at the Maison’s single manufacturing facility in Wingen-sur-Moder, Alsace, France. Lalique holds the distinction of “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant,” a designation awarded by the French government to companies that embody exceptional traditional craftsmanship.

Who was René Lalique, and why does his legacy matter?

René Lalique began his career as a jeweler in Paris in the 1880s, quickly earning commissions from Cartier and Boucheron. His interest in glass and unconventional materials led him to experiment beyond the boundaries of fine jewelry, and by the early 1900s he had become the defining figure in Art Deco glassmaking. His partnership with perfumer François Coty produced some of the era’s most celebrated perfume bottles. His architectural glass installations found in train stations and ocean liners established crystal as a serious medium of design. Many of René’s original designs, including the Bacchantes vase (1927) and the Mossi vase (1933), remain in production today, essentially unchanged.

Where is Lalique crystal made?

Every Lalique piece is made at the factory in Wingen-sur-Moder, in Alsace, the heart of France’s strongest glassmaking tradition. René Lalique relocated all production there in 1922. It remains the only Lalique production site in the world. The village of Wingen-sur-Moder was awarded the “Ville et Métiers d’Art” label in 2022. Glassmaking techniques of this kind have been recognized on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How is Lalique crystal made?

Every piece of Lalique crystal is made by hand at the original factory in Wingen-sur-Moder. A single crystal piece can take up to 40 different steps, a process that begins in the creation studio. The molten crystal is gathered like honey, then pressed or blown. Once cooled, it is cut, sanded, and polished. This is the process that produces Lalique’s signature satin finish, which generates an effect that combines light and shadow. For the Maison’s most intricate pieces, the lost-wax technique is employed: a process that remains virtually unchanged from René Lalique’s original methods. It preserves the integrity of his vision and allowing for a level of detail unmatched by other techniques.

What is the signature look of Lalique crystal?

Lalique’s most recognizable visual quality is the interplay between satin-frosted and polished clear crystal surfaces. This deliberate matte against brilliant contrast gives each piece a sculptural depth and an ability to catch and diffuse light in a way that changes with the time of day and setting. The Maison’s designs are consistently drawn from three themes central to René Lalique’s original vision: flora, fauna, and the female form.

What types of pieces does Kneen & Co carry from Lalique?

Kneen & Co carries a curated selection of Lalique crystal including decorative vases, sculptures, bowls, and barware and tableware. Whether you are looking for a statement decorative object, a refined addition to a bar collection, or a gift of lasting significance, our team can help you navigate the collection in store or online.

What are some of Lalique's most iconic designs?

Several Lalique designs have achieved the status of enduring icons. The Bacchantes vase, designed by René Lalique in 1927, features a ring of bas-relief figures drawn from classical mythology. It remains one of the most recognized crystal objects in the world. The Mossi vase (1933) plays with polished crystal spheres against satin surfaces to create a kaleidoscopic effect. The Champs-Élysées collection, designed by Marc Lalique in 1951, renders fine crystal leaves in a design inspired by the tree-lined avenue in Paris. The 100 POINTS barware collection was developed in collaboration with wine critic James Suckling and is designed to enhance the experience of fine wine and spirits. Many of these designs have been continuously produced for decades, a testament to the timelessness of René Lalique’s original language.

Is Lalique crystal suitable for everyday use?

Lalique crystal spans a range from purely decorative objects such as sculptures and vases intended as art, to functional tableware and barware designed for use. The Maison crafts stemware, tumblers, and decanters to be used and enjoyed, not simply displayed. For decorative pieces and sculptures, standard handling and care practices for fine crystal apply: hand washing with mild soap, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and storing away from direct sunlight to preserve the finish.

Is Lalique an appropriate choice for gifting?

Lalique is one of the most recognized names in luxury gifting. The Maison’s pieces arrive in distinctive Lalique packaging and carry a level of cultural recognition and craftsmanship narrative that makes them meaningful across a wide range of occasions, from weddings and significant anniversaries to collector acquisitions and corporate gifts. Kneen & Co’s team is available to assist with selection for any occasion. Our wedding registry program is well-suited to clients who wish to include Lalique in a curated table or home setting.

How can I authenticate a Lalique piece?

Authentic Lalique pieces are engraved with “Lalique France” on the base.  Kneen & Co sources pieces directly from Lalique as an authorized retailer, ensuring full authenticity. If you have questions about a piece acquired elsewhere, the engraved signature and accompanying documentation are the primary indicators of authenticity.

Does Lalique produce limited edition or artist collaboration pieces?

Yes. Lalique has a long history of collaborating with contemporary artists and designers to produce limited-edition crystal works that sit at the intersection of fine art and decorative object. These pieces are typically produced in numbered editions and are of particular interest to collectors. Contact our team for information on current or upcoming limited editions available through Kneen & Co.

As an authorized dealer, we’ve thoughtfully curated this selection to showcase signature pieces from the brand. Our partnership grants us access to their complete collection. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Contact our team for information on additional products and availability.
