The Ginori 1735 Volière Perroquet Nestor Mug carries a bird on each side: the Perroquet Nestor on the front and a kingfisher on the back. Turn it one way or the other to suit your mood, and enjoy a burst of color with morning coffee or afternoon tea. It also makes a thoughtful gift for someone who loves birds. The Perroquet Nestor is a Nestor parrot, from the group that includes New Zealand’s kākā and kea, its feathers moving from warm reds to deep greens. The kingfisher brings its own flash of brilliant color, so the mug has two faces worth admiring.
Each mug is made in fine porcelain at Manifattura Ginori, just outside Florence. The bird is painted in overglaze and fired in stages so its colors stay vivid, then framed in pure gold applied by hand.
Volière means aviary in French, and the collection began with a set of nineteenth-century bird sketches found in the Ginori 1735 archives. Set among warm florals and gold, the birds are made to be mixed, so a table with several of them feels collected rather than matched. Ginori 1735, founded near Florence in 1735, is one of Europe’s oldest porcelain makers.
