The Ginori 1735 Volière Dinnerware collection is an aviary for the table: dinner, dessert, and bread plates, soup plates and bowls, chargers, platters, and cups for tea and coffee, each with a single bird framed in florals and gold. The birds include the Coucou Didrie (a didric cuckoo), the Padda (a Java sparrow), the Perroquet Nestor (a Nestor parrot), the Tangara du Canada (a scarlet tanager), La Brève, and the Merle Vert. Choose one bird for a polished table, or mix several so every guest has a favorite.
Each piece is made in fine porcelain at Manifattura Ginori, just outside Florence, with most plates and platters in the Impero shape, named for the Empire style. The birds are painted in overglaze and fired in stages so their colors stay vivid, then framed in pure gold applied by hand.
Volière means aviary in French, and the collection began with a set of nineteenth-century bird sketches found in the Ginori 1735 archives. Set among warm florals and gold, the birds are made to be mixed, so a table with several of them feels collected rather than matched. Ginori 1735, founded near Florence in 1735, is one of Europe’s oldest porcelain makers.
