Nymphenburg Porcelain Neptune’s Horse with Wave No. 2040a

The expansive and opulently detailed Neptune’s Chariot table centerpiece is one of the defining creations in the history of Nymphenburg. This dramatic grouping is centered around Neptune, the mythological god of the sea, and his wife, Amphitrite, in a chariot formed by a richly scalloped shell. The chariot is pulled by sea horses—fantastical stallions with fish tails and fins—and protected and heralded by classically sculpted tritons brandishing reeds and blowing spiral shell horns.
